Last week, a Russian security firm discovered that over 17,000 Mac computers had been infected with a malicious software called iWorm that connected infected devices to a botnet by using Reddit to unearth links to command servers. This weekend, both Apple and Reddit took measures that rendered the software ineffective.
TextExpander has announced that its custom keyboard will be coming when iOS 8 gets publicly released. Tapping into Apple's new extensions, TextExpander allows you to quickly type information by entering shortcuts; essentially it's typing by shorthand.
"TextExpander touch 3, coming on the heels of iOS 8 this fall, includes a TextExpander keyboard which can expand snippets in any app on the iPhone or iPad, including built-in apps such as Mail and Safari," the developer wrote in a blog post detailing the keyboard.
For example, instead of typing your full name, title, company, and contact information in the signature of your emails, you can just type "sig" on the TextExpander keyboard and your full signature would appear. Similarly, typing just "date" will populate today's date.

The keyboard will work with all apps and will also support full VoiceOver accessibility.

Clear by Realmac is a massively popular iOS app, and today they're giving us a look at the next addition, reminders. We'd previously heard reminder functionality was being added to the app, and now on the Realmac blog we're told to expect the update sometime in early April.
As we wrap up work on the iOS and Mac releases, I just wanted to let you know where we’re at. The team has been working incredibly hard to make this happen, however we also want to make reminders as intuitive as possible - and that means we’ve been constantly tweaking and refining how things work. The changes mean we’ve over-run from our (already-delayed) March launch - and we’re now looking to release the updates in early April.
Better to get it right than to rush it and have it affect the experience. We'll be keeping our eyes open for this one early next month.

While Microsoft has sold a ton of Xbox Ones, not all of them are functioning as their owners hoped they would. It turns out that some of the consoles are having problems with their optical drives -- some eat discs, while others reject them while a series of ominous sounds emanate from within. The good news is, should you be among those unfortunate souls, Microsoft is aware of the problem and is doing its best to make amends, including giving some affected parties a free game. Polygon reports that Xbox customer care has offered a game as recompense for some faulty consoles, and will let folks choose to download Dead Rising 3, Forza Motorsport 5, Ryse: Son of Rome or Zoo Tycoon for free. We reached out to Microsoft about its generosity, and here's what the company has to say on the matter:
While a replacement console is on its way, we want to ensure our advance exchange customers can stay in the game. We will provide each of them with a free digital download of one of the launch titles published by Microsoft Studios.

It's easy to worry about internet privacy these days, but it can be a pain to set up a Tor connection that keeps the snoops and thieves at bay. Pogoplug wants to simplify the process with its newly available Safeplug adapter. The peripheral connects to most any internet router and uses Tor to anonymize all web requests that pass through, saving the trouble of launching a special browser every time you want to keep your data secret. It can also join the Tor network to help safeguard others' information, if you're feeling generous. While the Safeplug won't be much help when you're away from home, it's relatively cheap at $49 -- a small price to pay if you don't want anyone tracking your web surfing habits.
